'No Aribo today' - GvB jokingly asks journalist why influential midfielder wasn't his MOTM
Published: December 26, 2021
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has had a successful one month as coach of Glasgow Rangers with his team going nine games unbeaten across all competitions following a 2-0 success over St Mirren at Ibrox Stadium on Boxing Day.
The Dutchman made three changes from the team that faced Dundee United eight days ago, one of which saw Joe Aribo return to the middle of the park, while Calvin Bassey continues to deputize for the recuperating Leon Balogun in central defence.
Scott Wright, with a header at the back post, broke the deadlock in the 14th minute and Alfredo Morelos gave the Light Blues a two-goal advantage at minute 26.
From a set-piece, Aribo's flick on was forced in by Wright to give the home team an early breakthrough.
At the post-match press conference, a journalist revealed that Wright was his Man of the Match but he was cut short at that point by Van Bronckhorst, who jokingly quizzed him, 'No Joe Aribo today?'
Aribo has been unarguably the most influential player at Rangers since Van Bronckhorst took over the managerial reins from Steven Gerrard, scoring three goals and setting up a goal in seven league outings.
Today's clash against the St Mirren was his last game for Rangers before reporting for international duty ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
