Super Eagles' substantive coach: NFF boss seeks advice from Wenger, ex-Chelsea manager
Published: December 23, 2021
Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has admitted that he sought advice from two legendary Premier League managers in his search for a new Super Eagles manager.
The three-time African champions are looking to appoint a substantive coach before the final round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers after they parted ways with Gernot Rohr earlier this month.
Though Pinnick has absolute confidence in interim manager Augustine Eguavoen, the Nigerian Federation want to appoint a world-class coach to tutor some of the most promising talents in Africa.
The Nigerian Federation boss has consulted with former Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, and legendary ex-Arsenal football tactician Arsene Wenger about the hiring process of a new Super Eagles coach.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Pinnick said : "I also spoke with Arsene. Arsene is our technical director at FIFA. I had an interface personally with him on some of these coaches. And of course Mourinho. These are two of the best coaches in the world.
"I am not going to tell you that we did not talk to Mourinho, even the Minister spoke with Mourinho and there's nothing wrong about that because he's equally as concerned the way we are.
"Our last coach was with us for five years plus because we don't want to be going back and forth, we didn't want to make any mistake.
"We want to make sure we dot all the i's and everything will come in a near perfect situation and I think that's what we did".

Two Portuguese coaches José Peseiro and Jose Morais, who have close links with Jose Mourinho, are believed to be the frontrunners to replace Rohr.
Serbian manager Mladen Krstajić had been in the running for the Super Eagles job before his recent appointment as Maccabi Tel Aviv head coach.
