AFCON 2021 : Five new players in line to be named in Nigeria's provisional squad
Published: December 18, 2021
Five new players are in line to be named in Nigeria's provisional squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, interim boss Augustine Eguavoen has revealed.
Erstwhile coach Genort Rohr already submitted a provisional squad containing forty players to the Nigeria Football Federation before he was dismissed, but Eguavoen has confirmed that he will make some adjustments to the list.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to begin a training camp in Nigeria the week after Christmas, before flying out to Cameroon.
Speaking to Brila FM, Eguavoen said : "Ninety percent of the players in the team have been together. We'll stick with the team that has been together, but we will bring in a few, maybe five.
"Only a few new faces will get called up. Our players are not as bad as some of the results maybe have appeared."
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that former Arsenal midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is a player of interest to Eguavoen while the very top of the Nigeria Football Federation is pushing for the invitation of highly-rated Hammarby attacking midfielder Akinkunmi Amoo.
Three-time African champions Nigeria open group play at the AFCON against Egypt on January 11, followed by matches against Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.
