Bassey scores OG, Aribo subbed in as Rangers end Lyon's perfect record in Europa League
Published: December 09, 2021
Glasgow Rangers ended Lyon's perfect record in the Europa League group stage after the Scottish champions forced them to a 1-1 draw at the Groupama Stadium on Thursday evening.
Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst made six changes from the team which defeated Dundee at the weekend, one of which saw Joe Aribo drop to the bench.
2021 Super Eagles invitee Calvin Bassey continues to deputize for the rehabbing Leon Balogun who didn't travel to the South of France, starting in central defence along with Connor Goldson.
The Light Blues started the game brightly, were able to soak up the pressure that Lyon produced and were rewarded for their efforts in the 42nd minute when Scott Wright opened the scoring.
There was an element of fortune in Wright's goal as his effort from the edge of the area was deflected beyond the reach of Lyon goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck.
Lypn equalised three minutes into the second half when Rayan Cherki found space in the right channel and fired a low shot across goal that was going wide until Bassey steered it past his own goalkeeper.
Aribo maintained his involvement in every game in the group stage when he hopped off the bench to replace Kemar Roofe with seventeen minutes to go.
The Super Eagles midfielder very nearly gave Rangers all three points in stoppage time but missed the target.
Rangers were already through to the knockout rounds of the Europa League before their trip to France and ended the group stage in second place with eight points.
