Super Eagles invitee reveals the key reason he ended 6-year association with Liverpool
Published: October 06, 2021
Tawio Awoniyi ended a six-year association with English Premier League giants Liverpool in the summer transfer window, joining German Bundesliga side Union Berlin on a permanent deal for a fee of 6.5 million euros.
Signed from Imperial Soccer Academy, Awoniyi was unable to
secure a work permit until the summer of 2021, leading to loan spells at FSV
Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent, Mainz 05 and Union Berlin.
His permanent switch to Union Berlin contributed in a big way to the center forward earning a maiden call-up to the senior national team for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Central African Republic.
Speaking at Wednesday's pre-match press conference monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Awoniyi admitted that Liverpool are a great club but had to move on to pastures new because he needed stability in his career after a work permit obstacle prevented him from playing in the English Premier League prior to this season.
After spending the whole of the 2020-2021 campaign on loan at Die Eisernen, the 2013 U17 World Cup winner said it was an easy decision to return to Union Berlin as he was greatly appreciated and well received during his first stint with the club.
In 12 outings across all competitions so far this season, Awoniyi has mustered 8 goals while providing two assists.
The 24-year-old represented Nigeria at the 2013 U17 World Cup, 2015 U20 World Cup and was named in the country's provisional squad for the 2016 Olympic Games.
