Dessers finishes the season strongly with third goal in three games as Genk beat Club Brugge
Published: May 23, 2021Cyriel Dessers has finished the season strongly with Racing Genk, scoring for the third consecutive match in a 2-1 road win against Belgian First Division A champions Club Brugge at the Jan-Breydel-Stadion on Sunday evening.
The former Heracles Almelo hitman has been in the shadows of fellow Nigeria international Paul Onuachu, who has broken records upon records on the way to being crowned top scorer in the division.
Something changed in the last few weeks of the season as he rediscovered his form, scoring in each of his last three games.
Not since the 4-0 home win vs KAS Eupen on October 30 had he made the starting lineup before the trip to Club Brugge.
The statistics don't change in the Beker van Belgie, a competition Dessers was named in the starting XI just once out of a possible five.
This evening, the Belgian-Nigerian started in attack as Onuachu watched proceedings from the bench and he repaid his manager's faith by netting his seventh of the season from the spot with five minutes left on the clock.
Three of the seven goals netted by Dessers in the league came from the penalty spot.
