Official : Union Berlin confirm Awoniyi is returning to parent club Liverpool
Published: May 22, 20212013 U17 World Cup winner Taiwo Awoniyi has played his last match for German Bundesliga club Union Berlin.
The
center forward was in action for 32 minutes as Union Berlin defeated RB
Leipzig 2-1 to qualify for next season's Europa Conference League.
Awoniyi
joined Union Berlin on a season-long loan last September - his sixth
loan club after previous stints at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal
Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent and Mainz 05.
Through their official website,
Union Berlin informed that two thousand of their fans were at the An
der Alten Forsterei to bid farewell to Awoniyi and seven other players
who will head off to pastures new after the end of the campaign.
Despite
spending three months on the sidelines due to a muscle injury, Awoniyi
ended up featuring in 22 matches in all competitions for the capital
team, scoring five goals and registering four assists.
It
is expected that the former Nigeria U23 international will resume
pre-season training with Liverpool's first team as has been the norm in
recent seasons before manager Jurgen Klopp will make a decision whether
or not to retain him on the roster for the 2021-2022 campaign.
Awoniyi
has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2015 after
joining the Anfield side from Imperial Academy in his homeland.
