Mourinho promotes talented Nigerian GK to Tottenham first team training; travels with squad to Newcastle
Published: April 06, 2021Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho promoted London-born Nigerian goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi to first team training before their English Premier League meeting with Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has undergone surgery to his left knee after tearing his meniscus and is not expected to return to training until May 2021, leaving Tottenham Hotspur short on personnel in the goalkeeping department.
Mourinho monitored Oluwayemi at close quarters before including him in the traveling squad to Newcastle United as the 'twenty-first man'.
The 20-year-old was spotted warming up with experienced goalkeepers Hugo Lloris and Joe Hart before the game kicked off at St. James' Park.
Oluwayemi spent the first half of the season at National League side Maidenhead United on loan for his first taste of senior football, before returning to Spurs in the January transfer window.
The Anglo-Nigerian was installed as Tottenham U23s first-choice goalkeeper upon his return from his loan spell, and kept a clean sheet in his last outing in the Premier League 2 against Manchester United.
Joshua Oluwayemi comes from a family of goalkeepers as his father, Abiodun Ogunyemi, was a goalkeeper for Ogun State University, while his sibling, Tobi is also a goalkeeper at Glasgow Celtic.
