Southampton's Belgian-Nigerian winger beginning to live up to the billing as a future star
Published: February 28, 2021Belgian-Nigerian winger Kazeem Olaigbe is beginning to live up to the billing as a future star following his outstanding performances for Southampton youth teams this season.
Signed from Anderlecht on scholarship terms in the summer of 2019, Olaigbe wasn't performing at his best in his first season in England, failing to score in 21 matches combined in the U18 Premier League, Premier League 2, FA Youth Cup and EFL Trophy.
Capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, winger or in a center forward role, the dual-eligible teenager is now enjoying a rich vein of form, so much so that he has been promoted to Southampton's B team.
He began this season with the Saints U18 team but made the step up after contributing to six goals (3 goals, 3 assists) in four matches in the U18 Premier League.
Having fired blanks in his first five matches in this season's Premier League 2, Olaigbe has scored three goals in his last four matches in the division, including his strike against Manchester United on Saturday.
Everything indicates that Olaigbe can make the leap to the first team as Southampton are known for blooding a lot of youngsters and look no further than Nathan Tella and Michael Obafemi.
The 18-year-old is provisionally cap-tied to Belgium, whom he has captained at U17 level.
