Promising Midfielder Uwakwe Ready To Play Wing-back Role For Chelsea In Pre-season
Published: February 13, 2021Chelsea starlet Tariq Uwakwe has admitted that it has been difficult playing in a left wing-back role at League One club Accrington Stanley, where he's on loan for the 2020-2021 campaign.
The preferred role of the former England U18 international of Nigerian descent is central midfielder or left winger and his new position at Stanley comes with defensive responsibilities.
Former Blues manager Antonio Conte converted Victor Moses into a wing-back in Chelsea's last title winning season and Callum Hudson-Odoi , who is an orthodox winger, has been utilized as a wing-back under new coach Thomas Tuchel.
Uwakwe says he is ready to play as a wing-back if he is asked to play in the position in pre-season., even though his favourite position is the midfield role.
Asked if he sees himself playing as a wing-back in the future, Uwakwe told Chelsea's official website : "It’s hard to say because I always see myself playing in midfield or higher up in the future.
"But as you see now, Chelsea are currently playing with wing-backs so you have to be adaptable.
"If I’m asked to play there in pre-season, I would be happy to take my chance to play and hopefully perform and show people that I can do that."
The 21-year-old Uwakwe has directly participated in eight goals (4 goals, 4 assists) in 19 matches for Accrington Stanley.
