Olayinka Enhances Growing Reputation After Scoring For Arsenal In EFL Trophy
Published: August 27, 2019Nigerian midfielder James Olayinka enhanced his growing reputation by scoring for Arsenal in their loss on penalties to League Two side Northampton Town in an EFL Trophy clash at PTS Academy Stadium on Tuesday evening.
He was joined in the starting line-up by Folarin Balogun, Tolaji Bola and Joseph Olowu, while defenders Tobi Omole and Mazeed Ogungbo saw action off the bench for the Gunners U21 team.
Olayinka was given the opportunity to train with Arsenal's first team in pre-season and traveled with the squad to the United States, where he featured in matches against Colorado Rapids and Fiorentina.
The 18-year-old, who is perceived to have similar qualities as former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey, opened his account for the season when he converted at the back post in the 78th minute.
Arsenal's lead lasted barely four minutes before Hoskins fired into the net assisted by Oliver, which sent the game to a penalty shootout.
Steve Bould's side missed two penalties and the home team won 4-3 after converting all but one of their kicks.
Balogun took a penalty for Arsenal in the shootout and was successful.
