Super Eagles Coach Rohr Reveals One Big Worry Ahead Of Cracker Vs South Africa
Published: July 10, 2019Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has demanded more tactical discipline from his players heading into their quarterfinal fixture against South Africa at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
All the four goals conceded by the Super Eagles at the AFCON were as a result of defensive errors, with Leon Balogun, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo and Ola Aina the culprits.
Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been unconvincing to say the least and the fact that the Super Eagles have kept only two clean sheets in their last five games is a genuine cause for concern.
''We saw it already against Madagascar, two individual mistakes caused the goals, gifts, so now it is not a good moment to make gifts,'' Rohr said in an interview with the Super Eagles Media team.
''We have to be more disciplined, more committed in the defensive job. What we did against Cameroon half-time, we changed the organization in the midfield that Alex is helping a little bit more our two defensive midfielders.
''And it was better in the second half because our fullbacks could stay closer to the wingers which was not the case in the first half.
''Sometimes there is lack of communication between our players, between goalkeepers and central defenders, between central defenders and fullbacks, between fullbacks and wingers so we must do better in this department, in the communication especially in the defensive organization of our players.''

Despite the defensive deficiencies, former Watford striker Odion Ighalo has been able to win matches almost on his own, having a hand in four of the five goals netted by the Super Eagles at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
