Five Takeaways From Nigeria's Hard-Fought 3-2 Win Against Cameroon
Published: July 06, 2019Nigeria's Super Eagles outfoxed the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to claim a 3-2 win in a round of 16 match at the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.
What are the key takeaways from the battle at the Alexandria stadium? Izuchukwu Okosi examines them.
1. Bassogog And Njie Swapped Places
The duo of Christian Bassogog and Clinton Njie started on the right and left wings respectively but later switched places as the left footed Bassogog had difficulty dealing with Nigeria's right footed left back Ola Aina.
The Nigerian defender was primed to deal with his shifting of the ball to his dominant foot.
The switch seemed to worked a trick as the Eagles were troubled.
2. Sloppy Defending By The Eagles
The Eagles were put under tremendous pressure by the Cameroonian attackers and that forced some calamitous clearances by the Eagles' defenders.
3. The Wings Remains Nigeria's Best Option
The pace of Ahmed Musa and Moses Simon, and later Samuel Chukwueze, proved to be a huge advantage for Nigeria.
It proved that the Nigerian team have many match winners and having nine attackers might be blessing in disguise despite criticisms from some Nigerians.
4. Omeruo Is Nigeria's Best Defender of The 2019 AFCON
Kenneth Omeruo had a very impressive game against Cameroon. The Leganes defender cleared the ball efficiently and harried the Cameroonian attackers all evening. He did make one schoolboy clearance.
5. Supportive Nigerian Fans
The Nigerian Supporters Club drummed and sang all through the game even when Nigeria were 2-1 down.
That was inspiring and they also had former Eagles captain and two-time African Footballer of the Year Nwankwo Kanu (flanked by Samuel Etoo) cheering.
That was heartwarming and encouraging.
