Official: Talented Nigerian Goalkeeper Joins Manchester City, Breaks Irish Transfer Record
Published: October 05, 2018Through a statement on their official website, League of Ireland Premier Division side Shamrock Rovers have confirmed the transfer of promising Nigerian goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to Manchester City.
Shamrock Rovers revealed that the transfer of Bazunu to the Premier League champions is the first major sale of a player developed by the Shamrock Rovers Academy since its inception in 2016.
Though the transfer fee has not been disclosed, the Hoops say it is the biggest transfer by an Irish club in the professional era.
The external Irish transfer record was previously held by Roy O'Donovan, who moved to Sunderland in the 2007-2008 season for €500,000.
Born in Dublin, Bazunu played for Republic of Ireland U15 national team before he was promoted to the U17s and posted a shutout in an international friendly against Turkey last month.
Aged 16 years and 109 days, he became the youngest goalkeeper to debut for Shamrock Rovers first team when he was named in the starting line-up against Bray Wanderers in June 2018.
