Tyronne Ebuehi will not be named in the Super Eagles traveling party for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in September.
Benfica have reported on their official website that the right fullback will undergo surgery in the coming days after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee.
Though the Primeira Liga side have not disclosed the defender's anticipated length of absence, the recovery time for an ACL injury is approximately six months and this effectively rules him out of Nigeria's first match after the 2018 World Cup.
Ebuehi's last match for Benfica was against Juventus in an International Champions Cup game on Saturday in which he was introduced in the 67th minute and he was also a second-half substitute against Borussia Dortmund on July 26.
The 22-year-old had agreed a five-year deal with The Reds before appearing for the Super Eagles at the World Cup.
Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr is sweating on the fitness of John Obi Mikel before announcing his roster for the AFCON qualifier against Seychelles.
