Rohr Admits He Failed In Duty To Convince Akpoguma, Torunarigha To Represent Nigeria
Published: June 08, 2018Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that part of his job description is to convince players with double nationality to pledge their international future to Nigeria.
However, the former Bayern Munich defender has admitted that he was unable to persuade German-born duo, Hoffenheim starlet Kevin Akpoguma and Hertha BSC's Jordan Torunarigha, to play for the Super Eagles at the World Cup.
Amkar Perm defender Brian Idowu, Chelsea fullback Ola Aina and new Benfica signing Tyronne Ebuehi earned their first caps under Gernot Rohr while foreign-born duo Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun are his preferred choice in the center of defense.
Asked by German newspaper Welt if it's part of his job to win players for the national teams, Rohr replied : '' Yes, that's part of it. We've also convinced some, like Alex Iwobi from Arsenal , who grew up in England. Incidentally, he is the nephew of Jay-Jay Okocha.
''Others, who I've rung once, refused, for example Kevin Akpoguma from Hoffenheim or Jordan Torunarigha from Hertha BSC .''
Former Norwich City striker Efan Ekoku was the first foreign-born player to be named in Nigeria's squad for the World Cup, but he was a non-playing sub in the Super Eagles four matches at USA 1994.
