Manchester United Defender Of Nigerian Descent Debuts For USA Senior Team
Published: May 29, 2018Promising Manchester United defender Matthew Olosunde made his debut for the United States senior team in their 3-0 rout of Bolivia at Talen Energy Stadium (Chester, Pennsylvania) on Monday, May 28.
The right-back was kept on the bench from the start but picked up his first cap for USMNT when he was introduced by manager Dave Sarachan in the 74th minute as replacement for captain Eric Lichaj.
Olosunde had sixteen minutes to show Sarachan what he can do before the coach announces his roster for friendlies against Republic of Ireland (June 2) and France (June 9).
The New York Red Bulls Product has earned his first senior cap without making his professional debut for Manchester United, and his stock is expected to rise ahead of the start of pre-season training in July.
Three goals from Walker Zimmerman, Josh Sargent and Tim Weah secured a comfortable win for the Americans.
Olosunde had played for United States U15, U17 and U20 national teams prior to his international debut for the senior team. He remains eligible to represent the Super Eagles.
