Toronto FC Wonderkid Akinola Set To Follow In The Footsteps Of Man Utd's Olosunde
Published: September 19, 2017Toronto FC wonderkid of Nigerian descent Ayo Akinola is in line to feature for the United States in next month's Fifa U17 World Cup in India.
US U17 national team head coach John Hackworth will run the rule over the striker and twenty two other players at a training camp in Bradenton, before naming his final 21-player squad for the tournament.
It is almost a foregone conclusion that Akinola will be one of the players selected if he doesn't pick up an injury during the get-together in Florida, as he was one of the USA U17s standout players at the 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.
And if that is the case, the 17-year-old will follow in the footsteps of four players of Nigerian descent Oguchi Onyewu, Amaechi Igwe, Boyd Okwuonu and Manchester United's Matthew Olosunde, who previously represented the Americans at the Fifa U17 World Cup.
Ayo Akinola scored four goals at the 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in matches against Honduras, Jamaica (2) and Mexico.
USA have been drawn into Group A with host India, Ghana and Colombia for the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup which runs from October 6-28 in India.
