Wolves Nigerian Goalkeeper Ikeme Diagnosed With Acute Leukaemia
Published: July 06, 2017Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia, EFL Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced on their official webpage.
During the mandatory pre-season testing, it was discovered that the Nigerian netminder returned some abnormal blood tests and additional tests revealed he is suffering from leukaemia.
“It would be an understatement to say that everyone at Wolves has been shocked and saddened to hear the news of Carl’s diagnosis,” said Wolves' Managing Director Laurie Dalrymple to wolves.co.uk.
“There are going to be some very tough times ahead, but he will receive the best possible care, aided and supported by our own club doctor and medical team, as he embarks on the lengthy process of treatment.
“We are speaking to Carl regularly, and sending him our very best wishes as he comes to terms with this news and starts his recovery.”
Carl Ikeme has spent the whole of his professional career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and progressed through the youth ranks before making his debut against Chester City on on 23 August 2005.
The 31-year-old has enjoyed loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Stockport County, Charlton Athletic, Sheffield United, Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, Boro and Doncaster Rovers.
