Edwin Okon Deflects Questions On How He Handles Gay Players In Super Falcons Squad
Published: June 16, 2015Ahead of the meeting between Nigeria and the United States at the Fifa Women’ s World Cup, Super Falcons manager Edwin Okon was quizzed about how he handles the gay players in his roster.
American magazine Sports Illustrated has claimed in its electronic edition, citing an anonymous source, that at least two players failed to make Nigeria’ s roster to Canada because they are lesbians.
“I don’t know what you mean by ‘homosexual.’ I don’t deal with personal lives,” Edwin Okon told si.com.
“I think of the game proper. I don’t think of my players’ life. I only think of what they do on the pitch. That is what concerns me.”
It was suggested by the publication that over 30 to 40 percent of the Nigerian women’s team has been gay or bisexual but did not make it public.
