3 Years After Rashidi Yekini Death : Friends and Associates Hold Prayer
Published: May 04, 2015Monday 4th of May makes it three years that the late African best footballer and the first player to score a World Cup goal for Nigeria, Rashidi Yekini, died in a controversial manner.
To mark the occassion, friends and associates gathered in his house to organize a prayer in his memory.
The prayer session which was organized at the expense of the lawyer to the late ‘goal-king’ Jubril Mohammed was held in Islamic way at the expansive mansion of Yekini located at Busayo Taiwo, street, Oni and Sons area Ring-road Ibadan
None of the relatives of the late Vitória Setúbal goal poacher was in attendance, except for his few friends, especially from the
Sabo (the Hausa community in Ibadan) and few of his colleagues at Shooting Stars.
“There is nothing commensurable with his contribution to the Nigerian football done in his honour by the expected quarters.
“I shouldered all theexpenses of what we did during his first anniversary, and that was the last time something meaningful was done in his remembrance.
“I have the intention of donating a trophy and branded jerseys for teams to play a friendly match in his honour, but my financial capacity cannot accommodate that now” said the confidant and lawyer to the late Super Eagles’ striker.
It would be recalled that Rashidi Yekini was abducted from his house according to eye witnesses account by some heavily turbaned clerics whocame in company of his siblings and died three weeks later, 4th May and was buried on 5th May 2012 at his home town Ira, Kwara State.
