'Wants Dessers to be more of a killer' - Ex-Aston Villa star shares what Rangers coach told him about striker
Published: April 24, 2024Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has revealed that Rangers manager Philippe Clement told him that he wants Cyriel Dessers to be more ruthless in front of goal following an inconsistent start to his career at Ibrox.
Signed from US Cremonese last summer, Dessers struggled to adapt to his new team and the Scottish Premiership in his first few months as a Rangers player so much so that he was often maligned by the supporters.
He has improved under Philippe Clement, registering 21 goal involvements (16 goals, 5 assists) in 33 outings, yet he is lacking consistency.
The Nigeria international was the standout performer as Rangers defeated Heart of Midlothian FC to set up a meeting with fierce rivals Celtic in the final of the Scottish FA Cup, netting both goals in a 2-0 victory.
Hutton stated that Clement is satisfied with Dessers' development this season and expressed confidence that the striker would provide even greater contributions to Rangers in his second season in Scotland.
"Clement spoke about how he wants Dessers to be more of a killer – more ruthless," Hutton said to Football Insider.
"Dessers is too nice at times, so he’s a work in progress.
"I think Clement will be happy at this moment in time as he knows there’s potential there and much more to come.
"But if he does continue to score these goals, then it puts Rangers in a great position for the rest of the season."
Dessers, top scorer in the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League, has a contract with Rangers until June 2027.
