'We are not going to play with 10 men' - Atalanta coach on the absence of Lookman for Barcelona clash
Published: January 28, 2025Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has spoken out about the absence of forward Ademola Lookman, who was injured in training and will miss his side's crucial Champions League clash with Barcelona on Wednesday.
Gasperini made it clear that while Lookman's injury is a blow for both the team and the player, the Bergamaschi will not be left short-handed.
"We are not going to play with 10 men," Gasperini told Atalanta media when asked how the absence of Lookman would affect his plans.
The Nigerian forward had been in fine form this season, contributing significantly to Atalanta's attacking play, but his injury has forced Gasperini to re-evaluate his lineup ahead of one of the club's most important European fixtures.
Lookman’s absence is especially felt in this top-tier encounter, where every player is expected to perform at their best.
"Clearly, Lookman's absence tomorrow will be a pity both for us and for him as well," Gasperini added.
Despite the setback, the coach remains confident in his team's ability to adapt and rise to the challenge.
These high-stakes games, Gasperini noted, are always an opportunity for growth and learning.
"These are top-tier games, and whenever you play in these kinds of matches, regardless of the outcome, they always give you something valuable and teach you lessons for the road ahead," he explained.
Although the absence of Lookman adds an extra challenge for Atalanta, Gasperini assured fans that his team would be prepared.
"We'll see. As I said before, our aim is to take to the pitch what we do best," he said, signaling that Atalanta’s commitment to their style of play will remain unchanged.
Atalanta, currently sitting in the hunt for an automatic place in the last 16 of the Champions League, will need to overcome Barcelona in Spain if they are to secure their spot.
The absence of Lookman will undoubtedly be a significant challenge, but Gasperini's confidence in his squad suggests that Atalanta will not back down from the task at hand.
