'Wants to stay at Liverpool' - Nedum Onuoha has his say on the future of Egypt captain

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has weighed in on Mohamed Salah's contract situation at Liverpool, suggesting that the Egypt national team captain is keen to remain at the club beyond this season.

Salah, who has been in scintillating form during the 2024/25 campaign, with 17 goals and 13 assists in just 19 Premier League appearances, is in the final months of his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

As a result, the 32-year-old is free to negotiate with other clubs, sparking speculation about his future.

Despite the ongoing rumours, Onuoha believes Salah intends to stay at Anfield, pointing to the fact that talks over a new contract are still ongoing.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Onuoha said, "My belief is that Mohamed Salah wants to stay at Liverpool. If he did not want to stay then they would stop the negotiations."

Onuoha also suggested that if Salah were interested in joining another club, he could have made excessive demands from Liverpool during the negotiations.

He added, "He could very easily say to the club, ‘you can keep bringing this or that to the table but what we are seeking is not the same’ because he wants to go elsewhere. But they are still negotiating."

He emphasized that the ongoing discussions between both parties indicate that the issue is not about money or his age, as suggested by the media, which leads him to believe that Salah wants to remain at Liverpool.

"If it is a money thing or a years thing or a number he is trying to lean towards, I don't know, but that negotiation is striving for something. That leads me to believe that he wants to stay."

The continued discussions between Liverpool and Salah’s camp suggest that there is a strong desire on both sides to find common ground.
