'I am sure' - Former Belgium U21 coach reveals PL clubs are keeping tabs on Genk marksman Arokodare
Published: December 30, 2024Former Belgium U21 coach Jacky Mathijssen has backed Tolu Arokodare for a move to the Premier League.
The Nigerian forward has been a breakout star in the Jupiler Pro League this season, leading the top scorer's chart with 13 goals and has already surpassed his best tally since moving to Belgium.
However, he is still far from equaling the record for most goals scored by a Nigerian in the league, set by Paul Onuachu, who netted 33 goals during the 2020/2021 campaign for Genk.
With five assists to his name, Arokodare has a total of 18 goal involvements—the highest in the Belgian top flight—making him a leading contender for both the top scorer's award and the Belgian Golden Shoe, which is awarded to the league's best player.
Given his contributions to Racing Genk, Mathijssen believes that the 24-year-old has the quality to play in the Premier League and is confident that he already has suitors in England's top-tier division.
"I am sure that clubs from the Premier League are looking at him. The striker has a profile that is attractive to many top teams: physically strong, scoring ability and a huge impact on the game," he told Het Nieuwsblad via voetbal24.
Arokodare has been linked with a move to Fulham, but Genk are reluctant to sell him due to their current league position.
The club sit at the top of the league standings and are trying to avoid a repeat of 2023 when they sold Onuachu midway through the season while leading the league.
Genk eventually lost the league title to Royal Antwerp that year, and they are determined to prevent history from repeating itself by keeping hold of their star striker—at least until the end of the current campaign.
