'He's very lucky' - Former Wales boss weighs in on Ndidi's red card debate in Leicester's loss to Chelsea
Published: November 23, 2024Former Wales manager Rob Page believes Wilfred Ndidi was lucky not to have been shown a red card during Leicester City's 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the early Premier League fixture played at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
The Super Eagles midfielder was involved in one of the key moments of the game when he stamped on the heel of Cole Palmer and was shown a yellow card by referee Andy Madley midway through the first half.
Chelsea players protested Madley's decision as they felt Ndidi should have been sent off for his tackle on Palmer.
Speaking about the incident on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Wales manager Rob Page stated that the Nigeria international was fortunate not to have been given his marching orders.
"Wilfred Ndidi is very lucky. It's a clumsy challenge, he has gone in for the tackle and landed on Cole Palmer's Achilles tendon."
Three minutes before half-time, Ndidi could have registered his first goal of the campaign, finding himself in a good position to score but his effort disappointingly drifted wide.
Before his substitution in the 71st minute, he had 22 touches of the ball, completed 75% of his passes, won two of the seven ground duels he contested, lost the aerial duels he was involved, lost the ball four times and made one clearance
Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 15th minute, showing confidence to find the back of the net with a one-time finish from Enzo Fernández's pass.
Fernández doubled the lead for the Blues, heading the ball home from a rebound, after Mads Hermansen had saved Jackson's initial effort.
Jordan Ayew reduced the deficit for the Foxes in stoppage time, scoring from the penalty spot, after De Cordova-Reid was tripped in the box by Lavia.
