Tottenham striker eligible for Super Eagles called up by England ahead of possible cap-tying games
Published: October 03, 2024According to multiple reports in the English media including The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur striker, Dominic Solanke has been named in the England squad ahead of possible cap-tying games against Finland and Greece in the UEFA Nations League.
The Cobham Academy product is eligible to play for England, where he was born and also through his mother, and is also qualified to play for Nigeria by virtue of being born to a Nigerian father.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, Solanke will lose the right to play for the Super Eagles if he gets involved for the Three Lions in any of the games, considering the fact that the is not an U21 player.
The 26-year-old has represented England in various youth levels including the U16s, U18s, U19s and U21s and won the European Championship with the U17s and the World Cup with U20s.
He was previously called up to the Three Lions squad in 2017 for a friendly game against Brazil, and he came on as a substitute for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy in the game.
Due to his inability to find his feet at club level until recently, he has been unable to get any involvement with the Three Lions.
He scored 19 goals in the Premier League last term and that earned him a move to Tottenham in the summer transfer window for a club-record fee.
After failing to score in his first three games for the North London side, he has found the back of the net in the past three games which has earned him a recall to the England national team.
The 1966 world champions will square up against Greece at the Wembley Stadium on October 10 before facing Finland at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, three days later.
