Denmark in the driving seat for Dorgu as Lecce's Super Eagles-eligible LB gets first senior call-up

The Danish Football Association are in the driving seat for the services of Patrick Dorgu, after inviting the teenage defender of Nigerian descent to the senior national team, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

The Lecce left-back has been called up to Denmark's senior national team for the first time in his career ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Switzerland and Serbia.

Last November, there was some confusion regarding Dorgu's potential call-up to the Super Eagles for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

While his agent Kingsley Ogbodo claimed that the fullback had been offered a place in the Super Eagles squad, Dorgu himself later clarified that he had not been contacted by the Nigeria Football Federation.

Barring an injury, it is a foregone conclusion that the exciting fullback will be included in Denmark's matchday squad when they face Switzerland on September 5, given that only twenty three players have been summoned for next month's internationals by acting national coach Lars Knudsen.

The 19-year-old played his first competitive game for Denmark's youth teams in a European U19 Championship qualifier with Georgia in September 2022, making him provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth.

Dorgu has received his first senior call-up after playing in thirty-seven games as a professional, including 34 in the Italian Serie A.

Playing against Switzerland and Serbia next month won't affect the talented defender's eligibility to play for Nigeria, even though the matches are competitive.

FIFA's eligibility rules state that a player can play up to three matches at senior level and switch his international allegiance to another country provided the three games were played before he turned 21.
