No going back: Nigeria's 2018 World Cup star Etebo agrees move to Turkish club Genclerbirligi
Published: July 22, 2024Allnigeriasoccer.com can report with certainty that Nigeria's 2018 World Cup star Oghenekaro Etebo has ended speculation over his future by agreeing a transfer to Turkish 1. Lig club Genclerbirligi.
Genclerbirligi have long been credited with an interest in the versatile midfielder, who has now confirmed that his transfer to the Turkish second tier club is done and dusted, with only an announcement pending.
Despite the Super Eagles failing to qualify for the round of 16, Etebo impressed during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he went the distance in all the matches played by the national team.
The 2015 CAF Most Promising Talent of the Year completed the most dribbles in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, with nine attempted and nine completed in Nigeria's 2-0 loss to Croatia in their opening match in Group D.
Etebo had been searching for a new club over the past twelve months following his release by Championship outfit Stoke City.
The Lord Honour FC product received two concrete proposals from Brazilian clubs but turned down the offers as he was holding out for a return to Europe.
Etebo has played in Turkey before with Galatasaray, making 29 all-competition appearances for the Istanbul giants on loan from Stoke City during the 2020-2021 season.
Apart from the aforementioned teams, the 2016 Olympics bronze medalist also counts Warri Wolves, Feirense, Las Palmas, Getafe, Watford and Aris Thessaloniki as his previous clubs.
