Manchester United confirm talks with Nigerian attacking midfielder over new deal
Published: June 05, 2024Through a statement on their official website, Premier League giants Manchester United have published their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.
The Red Devils have confirmed that discussions remain open with Newcastle-born Nigerian attacking midfielder Shola Shoretire over a potential new deal.
The academy graduate will leave Old Trafford as a free agent on July 1, 2024, if an agreement with his boyhood club is not reached.
However, Manchester United would be due compensation if he were to leave this summer as he was offered a new contract, coupled with the fact that he is an U24 player.
Shoretire last figured for the Manchester United teams in January 2024 amid speculation surrounding his future.
The 20-year-old had a banner season for Manchester United U21s, registering thirteen goal involvements (9 goals, 4 assists) in twelve appearances across all competitions.
He won the Premier League 2 Goal of the Season award for his wonderful strike against Chelsea in January at Kingsmeadow.
Shoretire is seeking to play first team football on a regular basis, be it at Manchester United or elsewhere.
Overall, he has made five appearances for United's first team, the last of which came against Crystal Palce on the final day of the 2021-2022 Premier League season.
Shoretire, Manchester United's youngest-ever player in European competition, spent the second half of the 2022-2023 campaign on loan at Bolton Wanderers, where he made sixteen appearances, scoring once while assisting twice.
