Published: May 23, 2024
Nigeria secured their spot in the semifinals of the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship by defeating Togo 3-0 in the final group stage match.
This victory propelled Nigeria to the semifinals with a total of seven points earned from three games.
Allnigeriasoccer presents five key observations from the match.
1) Manu Garba makes two altercations
The seasoned manager implemented two alterations to the lineup following the victory over the Niger Republic in the second match. John Ogwuche and Edward Ochigbo stepped in for Boluwatife Ekishola and Oreoluwa Agbenla.
Boluwatife Ekishola suffered an injury, rendering him unfit for the final group game against Togo. Nevertheless, Ogwuche assumed his role and performed admirably for the Eaglets.
2) ImpressivefFirst-half showing
The Golden Eaglets displayed determination and purpose in the first half, effectively overcoming the Togolese challenge. Securing a two-goal lead within the initial 45 minutes underscored the strength of their first-half performance.
Nigeria asserted dominance across all areas of the pitch, fully deserving their halftime advantage.
3) Nigeria's defensive strength persists
Nigeria maintains a strong defensive presence, displaying excellent organization and solidity in their performance. The Golden Eaglets have yet to concede a goal in the first three matches of the tournament.
Despite facing challenges from the Togolese side, the Golden Eaglets exhibited remarkable composure, coordination, and defensive understanding, ensuring Nigeria's continued display of defensive strength.
4) Golden Eaglets demonstrate goal-Scoring prowess
The Golden Eaglets had faced challenges converting opportunities in earlier matches. Despite numerous chances against Burkina Faso, Nigeria couldn't find the net, resulting in a goalless draw.
A similar situation unfolded in the second group game against Niger Republic, with Nigeria struggling to capitalize on chances but ultimately clinching victory with a solitary goal.
However, in the match against Togo, Nigeria exhibited clinical finishing, with Abdulmuiz Adeleke and Adams each scoring, showcasing a newfound scoring prowess.
5 ) Simon Cletus, Ochibo and Abdulmuiz Adeleke shine for Nigeria
Both players have consistently impressed throughout the tournament. Simon Cletus has garnered attention for his composed demeanor and adept control of the midfield, dictating the pace of play for Nigeria.
His knack for creating scoring opportunities and orchestrating Nigeria's strategy has earned him praise. Once again, in the match against Togo, he exhibited his talents, tallying two assists.
Abdulmuiz Adeleke, who netted a brace against Togo, proved to be a persistent threat for Nigeria with his dribbling skills, movement, and speed. Although he struggled with finishing against Burkina Faso, his double against Togo highlighted his scoring abilities.
Ochibo also stood out for Nigeria with his exceptional performance, earning him the Man of the Match award.
