Published: May 16, 2024
The Golden Eaglets were held to a goalless draw by Burkina Faso in their WAFU B U17 Championship against opener on Thursday evening at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The five-time world champions had several chances to break the deadlock and were denied by the woodwork in the closing minutes of the contest.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the game.
1. Simon Cletus impresses In midfield
Simon Cletus, the captain of the Golden Eaglets, exhibited strong leadership qualities through his performance in midfield.
The young player remained composed in possession and demonstrated excellent vision and intelligence in his passing.
2. Nigeria display defensive solidity
Nigeria showed great defensively display throughout the entire duration of the game.
The Eaglets displayed good organization and coordination to halt the attacking moves from the defending champions.
3. Manu Garba opt for possession style
Manu Garba has made it clear that he plans to employ a possession-based style of play, as demonstrated by the Eaglets' performance on Thursday.
Nigeria consistently tries to build up play from the back, control the midfield, and generate chances in the attacking third.
4. Golden Eaglets not clinical
The Golden Eaglets were unable to score against the defending champions due to missed opportunities.
Nigeria had multiple chances in both halves but lacked the finishing ability to convert them into goals. Additionally, in the second half, the team was unlucky as they hit the woodwork despite playing on a waterlogged pitch.
5. Adverse weather conditions
Despite harsh weather conditions, Nigeria had to persevere through heavy storms and rain during the second half of the match.
The downpour made it challenging for both teams to showcase their skills and hindered the possession-based football that was displayed by both sides in the first half.
Surprisingly, despite the tough weather conditions, the referee did not stop the game.
