'That's why we had to take him off' - Rangers boss confirms Leon Balogun has suffered an injury
Published: May 05, 2024
Speaking after his side's 4-1 hammering of Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers manager Philippe Clement explained why Leon Balogun was substituted during the clash at Ibrox Stadium.
The Light Blues came from behind to earn a win, thanks to goals from Fábio Silva, Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence and John Souttar.
Clement has shed light on why the Nigerian central defender did not appear for the second half, saying it was an injury-enforced substitution.
Balogun has managed to force his way into Rangers' starting lineup in recent weeks, having made three consecutive starts in all competitions.
The experienced defender suffered a suspected muscle injury and had to be substituted as he was struggling to play through the pain barrier.
The Belgian football tactician hopes Balogun's injury is not too serious and he will be available for the crunch game against bitter rivals Celtic on Saturday, May 11.
In quotes relayed by The BBC, Clement said: "That's why we had to take him off.
"No clue for the moment, we will see in the next few days what the situation is. Again, everybody is ready to step in and do a job for the team."
Balogun's injury has come at a time when he is aiming to win a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
In his second spell at Rangers, the 35-year-old has played in eighteen games, including seventeen starts.
