'I'd love to be there' - Nigeria-eligible striker Solanke hopes to become cap-tied to England at Euros
Published: April 14, 2024Bournemouth's record-breaking striker Dominic Solanke is hoping to gatecrash England's squad for this summer's European Championship.
The Chelsea academy product found the net on Saturday as the Cherries were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United at the Vitality Stadium, taking his Premier League tally for the campaign to 17 in the process.
Solanke set a new record for the highest number of goals scored by a Bournemouth player in a single Premier League season, surpassing Joshua King who managed 16 goals in 2016-2017.
Despite his brilliant form for Bournemouth, manager Gareth Southgate has not considered him for the England squad.
The 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup winner has been in the international wilderness since making his Three Lions debut off the bench in a pre-World Cup friendly against Brazil in November 2017.
If Solanke manages to force his way into the England squad for the Euros and given minutes in the tournament, the 26-year-old would become cap-tied to his country of birth.
Asked to share his thoughts on a potential selection for the European Championship, Solanke said to Sky Sports: "I would love to be there, everyone would love to be there, playing for your country in a big tournament.
"I just need to keep scoring and try and get as many as I can and I can be in with a shout."
England's strikers options for the 2024 European Championship include West Ham's Jarrod Bowen, Bayern Munich's Harry Kane, Brentford's Ivan Toney, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Newcastle United's Callum Wilson.
