Arsenal-owned player on the radar of Nigerian Federation named in EFL Team of Midweek
Published: April 12, 2024Arsenal-owned goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been named in the EFL Team of Midweek after his outstanding performance during Wrexham's 4-1 rout of Crawley Town at Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night.
The Hale End Academy product continues to prove he deserves a call-up to the Nigeria national team after a series of exceptional displays for Wrexham, where he is on loan until the end of the season.
NFF's technical director, Augustine Eguavoen has held multiple talks with Okonkwo and his representatives with a view to a potential call-up to the Super Eagles in the future.
Wrexham secured their 23rd win of the season thanks to goals from Ryan Barnett, Paul Mullin (2) and Andy Cannon, but Okonkwo was the unsung hero as he made a series of saves during the game.
The Arsenal loanee was on the brink of keeping his thirteenth clean sheet in the division, only to concede in the third minute of stoppage time when he was beaten by Klaidi Lolos from inside the box.
Okonkwo cracked the Team of Midweek after making seven saves in total, earning a Whoscored.com rating of 8.06.
The former England youth international spent last season on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz to gain valuable first team experience.
He has set his sights on helping Wrexham secure automatic promotion to the League One at the end of the season.
With only three matches remaining in the fourth tier of English football, the Red Dragons currently occupy the second position in the standings with 79 points, five more than fourth-placed MK Dons.
