'He'll get a professional contract' - Pundit reveals Arsenal want to keep hold of Flying Eagles-eligible striker
Published: April 10, 2024Simon Collings, who is a sports reporter for the Evening Standard and follows Arsenal closely, has revealed that the Premier League table-toppers would like to keep hold of Chido Obi-Martin and expects the Flying Eagles-eligible center forward to sign a professional contract in less than a year.
In England, youth players can only sign a professional contract at the age of 17, and therefore European clubs can actually sign Obi-Martin without spending a lot of money.
The Denmark U17 international of Nigerian descent has been identified as one of the standout players within the Arsenal academy and his exceptional talent has earned him invitations to train with the first team on numerous occasions, totaling at least a dozen.
Obi-Martin was involved in Arsenal's final training session before their Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
The 16-year-old has been in red-hot form since the start of March, scoring eleven goals in five appearances in the U18 Premier League.
Despite interest from top European clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Ajax Amsterdam, Obi-Martin has already sign a pre-scholarship deal with Arsenal ahead of the 2024-2025 season.
"I'm pretty sure he'll get a professional contract. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get it," Collings said to bold.dk.
"Thus, it is not certain that he will become a big profile for Arsenal, but then he will be able to be sent on to another club, so that Arsenal can earn something from him."
Obi-Martin is looked after by Elite Project Group, an agency that represents Nigeria internationals Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo, Ola Aina and Josh Maja.
