Battle on Kirkness Street: Three Super Falcons stars to look out for against Banyana Banyana
Published: April 08, 2024
On Tuesday, April 9, Nigeria's Super Falcons will do battle with South Africa's Banyana Banyana in a crucial Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium located at 416 Kirkness St, Arcadia, Pretoria.
While the Super Falcons deserve credit for their performance in the first leg, there were three individual displays that stood out.
These players will be critical once again if the Falcons are to secure their place at the Paris Olympics for the first time since 2008.
Rasheedat Ajibade
Leading the charge is Atletico Madrid forward Rasheedat Ajibade. Ajibade was a constant menace to the South African defense in the first leg, using her pace and trickery to create problems down the flanks.
Her calm penalty conversion just before halftime proved to be the difference between the two sides.
The Falcons will be hoping for a repeat performance from their star attacker. Her ability to not only create chances for herself but also for her teammates will be crucial in breaking down a potentially more aggressive Banyana Banyana defense in Pretoria.
Christy Ucheibe
A surprise hero from the first leg was SL Benfica's Christy Ucheibe. Originally a midfielder, Ucheibe was deployed as a center-back due to injuries in the squad.
However, she looked like a seasoned defender, marshalling the backline with authority and composure.
Her ball playing traits and ability to read the game were key in keeping a clean sheet.
With the potential for a more physical encounter in the return leg, Ucheibe's composure and leadership will be vital in ensuring the Falcons' defensive solidity remains intact.
Deborah Abiodun
The young Pittsburgh Panthers midfielder Deborah Abiodun injected a youthful spark into the Super Falcons' midfield in the first leg.
Her tireless work rate and ability to cover ground made her a vital link between defense and attack. Abiodun's energy and vision were instrumental in breaking up South Africa's attacks and initiating promising moves for the Falcons.
Her ability to control the tempo of the midfield battle will be a key factor in the return leg, especially if South Africa comes out pushing for an equalizer.
With these three players in top form, the Super Falcons have a great chance of securing their passage to Paris.
All eyes will be on them as they look to lead the nine-time African Queens to a historic Olympic qualification.
