Teenage Nigerian RB receives fourth senior call-up as Man Utd, Liverpool play out four-goal thriller
Published: April 07, 2024Nigeria-eligible right-back Habeeb Ogunneye was one of the academy players named in Manchester United's matchday squad in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Old Trafford on Sunday evening.
It was his fourth call-up for a first team game after he was an unused substitute against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Everton.
Luis Díaz opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with an acrobatic effort from Darwin Núñez's pass.
Bruno Fernandes restored parity for the home side in the 50th minute, looping the ball over Caoimhin Kelleher from long way out after a poor pass from Liverpool young center back Jarell Quansah.
Promising English midfielder Kobbie Mainoo gave Manchester United the lead in the 70th minute, curling the ball past Kelleher after receiving a simple pass from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Mohamed Salah brought the Reds back on level terms in the 84th minute from the penalty spot after Wan-Bissaka had hacked Harvey Elliot down in the penalty area.
In what was a highly-tensed encounter, it was no surprise that Ogunneye didn't play a single minute.
Due to injuries to Raphael Varane,Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Tyrrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, the 18-year-old had to be named in the matchday squad.
While being a part of the first team is a good development for the full back, he will be hoping to make his senior debut soon.
