'He loved the experience at Arsenal' - Luton boss reveals 16yo Nigerian defender was a Tottenham fan
Published: April 05, 2024Teenage defender of Nigerian descent Christian Chigozie still has a chance to become Luton Town's youngest-ever player in the Premier League.
The Hatters have officially confirmed that manager Rob Edwards will once again name the 16-year-old on the substitutes bench in the event that Reece Burke fails a fitness test before the Premier League clash against Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.
The schoolboy earned his first call-up to the first team in Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium but was a non-playing substitute.
Luton Town are still ravaged by injuries before the visit of the Cherries, with at least ten first teamers in the treatment room,
possibly creating an opportunity for Chigozie to secure a spot in the matchday squad.
Edwards revealed that Chigozie was delighted to accompany the first team to the English capital, adding that the young defender used to support Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in his earlier years.
"He loved the experience at Arsenal," Edwards said to the official website of the Hatters.
"We spoke to him and he told us he was a Tottenham fan when he was younger, so it was a special moment that he’ll remember for a long, long time.
"Hopefully it will inspire him and he’ll think ‘I want a bit of that’."
Edwards invited Chigozie to train with the first team after his impressive performances for the U18 and U21 teams.
He is not eligible to sign a scholarship deal with the Hatters until the end of the 2023-2024 season.
