'Both teams have changed so much' - Banyana Banyana GK concurs with Super Falcons coach Waldrum
Published: April 05, 2024
Kaylin Swart reckons that Banyana Banyana have what it takes to overcome Nigeria in their own backyard when both teams face off in the final round of the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers.
South Africa would fancy their chances in Friday evening's clash against the Super Falcons at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, knowing that they have beaten the nine-time African champions in their last two games.
However, Swart is on the same page as Super Falcons manager Randy Waldrum who stressed at yesterday's pre-match press conference that previous results between the two teams would not determine the outcome of today's game.
The Banyana Banyana goalkeeper highlighted that the make-up of both squads is not similar to the players who featured in the last two encounters.
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nonhlanhla Mthandi has not played against Nigeria in the past, while Kebotseng Moletsane and Sinoxolo Cesane are greenhorns on the international stage.
"We know Nigeria so well. We have played each other so many times over the years and I think they've always had an upper hand in previous encounters but we've grown so much as a team, as a nation," Swart said to SABC News.
"Women's football is growing in South Africa so I think individually we are superior than we used to be.
"It's going to be a real battle. Previous results obviously does matter but I don't think it's going to mean a lot now because both teams have changed so much."
The Nigeria v South Africa clash will kick off at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja at 1700 hours.
