Super Eagles team news: Calvin Bassey rated as doubtful after missing final training session pre-Ghana
Published: March 22, 2024
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told Fulham central defender Calvin Bassey is now rated as doubtful to take to the Stade de Marrakech turf on Friday evening when the Super Eagles take on Ghana's Black Stars in an international friendly.
Bassey was not involved in the Super Eagles final training session on Thursday, putting his participation in doubt.
With the exception of the Leicester City academy product, all the other players in camp trained including former Chelsea centre-back Kenneth Omeruo.
Omeruo returned to full training yesterday after he was excused from Wednesday's session, along with Bassey.
Bassey was one of the standout players for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he shone in the heart of defence and helped rookie goalkeeper at international level Stanley Nwabali keep four clean sheets on the bounce.
The Italian-born defender went the distance in the last six games contested by the Super Eagles at the AFCON and provided the assist for the clinching goal netted by Ademola Lookman in a 2-0 win over Cameroon in the round of 16.
It is believed that Bassey has not suffered a significant injury, otherwise, he would have been sent back to Fulham for further assessment.
Nigeria's interim boss Finidi Goerge is already without injured quartet Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Gabriel Osho (Luton Town) Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest) and Tyronne Ebuehi (Empoli) for the friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
