No joking around: Super Eagles interim boss Finidi vows to take Ghana, Mali friendlies seriously
Published: March 20, 2024
1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner Finidi George has spoken about what it feels to be handling the Super Eagles and has vowed to take the friendly games against Ghana and Mali seriously.
On Tuesday, the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the former Ajax Amsterdam forward as the caretaker coach for the upcoming games against the Black Stars and the Eagles.
The Super Eagles are without a substantive coach as a result of the exit of José Peseiro from his position after the expiration of his contract last month.
The NFF has received applications for the vacant position with George also said to be one of those that have expressed their interest.
He was part of Peseiro's coaching crew which might explain the reason behind his appointment as the coach for the upcoming friendlies.
The 52-year-old has spoken about managing the Super Eagles and has declared that the friendly games will not be taken lightly.
"Definitely as a coach, there is responsibility but that is what we do. We have to be calm, do your job and ensure you do it properly," Finidi said after the Super Eagles first workout on Tuesday evening.
"You know Nigerians are watching, we want to make them proud. AFCON is gone, these are two games that are very crucial to Nigeria. We will take it seriously and make sure to get the best out of these games."
Finidi will be hoping to impress in the forthcoming fixtures which might influence whether he becomes the substantive gaffer of the three-time Africa champions.
He is presently the head coach at the NPFL side Enyimba international with whom he won the league title last seasoN.
