Germany squads announcement: Bayer's Onyeka among four Nigerians called up; six on standby

The German Football Association have announced the rosters for the country's youth teams ahead of international matches in March, with four Nigeria-eligible players in contention to represent the European powerhouse. 

At U21 level, SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, the undisputed first choice for Germany U21s, is set to add to his international caps for the age group following his invitation for  upcoming European Championship qualifiers . 

Germany U21s will face Kosovo in Chemnitz on March 22 before a duel with Israel at the Leuna-Chemie Stadium in Halle/Saale on March 26.

Atubolu was a player of interest to former Nigeria coaches Gernot Rohr and Jose Peseiro but has opted to stick with Germany for the time being.

Eintracht Frankfurt central defender Nnamdi Collins is still in the plans of the German Federation though he has yet to make his senior debut at the age of 20.

The Düsseldorf native has been named in Germany U20s squad for a pair of friendlies against France on March 22nd and 25th, 2024 in Valencia.

Highly-rated defender David Odogu, a world champion at U17 level in 2023, has been named in Germany U18s 22-man squad for the international matches against the Netherlands (March 20), England (March 22) and the Czech Republic (March 25) in Pinatar,Spain.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Francis Onyeka is in Germany U17s squad for the second European Championship qualifying round in Braga.

The German U17s will compete with Croatia, Ireland and hosts Portugal for one or two of the tickets for the European Championship in Cyprus.

Meanwhile, six players of Nigerian descent have been placed on standby in case there is need for reinforcements. 

They include Borussia Monchengladbach's Joshua Uwakhonye (U19), Union Berlin's Oluwaseun Ogbemudia, Wolfsburg's Jonathan Akaegbobi (U18), Werder Bremen's Wesley Adeh, Wolfsburg's Trevor Benedict and Bayer Leverkusen's Ken Izekor (U17).
