2023 African Games: Bosso optimistic despite Flying Eagles' hard-fought win over South Sudan
Published: March 12, 2024
Coach Ladan Bosso is optimistic despite the Flying Eagles struggling to beat South Sudan in their second group game of the 2023 African Games at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday night.
The Nigeria U20s needed a late goal from new kid on the block Sadiq Isiyaka to see off a stubborn South Sudanese side.
There was little or no margin for error in the encounter against South Sudan given that the Flying Eagles were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by Uganda in their opener.
Bosso is without several of his key players from the 2023 Fifa U20 World Cup squad, including Brentford's Benjamin Fredrick, because the 2023 African Games falls outside the recognized Fifa international match calendar.
The experienced football tactician has faulted the Flying Eagles preparations in the buildup to the competition.
In quotes relayed by Daily Post, Bosso said post-match: "It was a hard-fought victory and I thank God that we got the three points we needed. Our preparation was not solid because we had a limited time to prepare for the games."
Nigeria are seeking to win the gold medal of the African Games for the first time since 1973 when they hosted it.
The Flying Eagles take on Senegal in a winner-takes-all clash in their final group game of the 2023 African Games on Friday night.
