Ex-Ajax Amsterdam midfielder would consider coaching Super Eagles but on one condition
Published: March 11, 2024
Former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Sunday Oliseh has said that he would consider a return to coaching the Super Eagles provided the conditions are favorable.
The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner and two-time World Cupper had a short spell as coach of Nigeria's national team, from July 2015 to February 2016, and lost only one match while winning three and drawing three.
The Nigeria Football Federation are on the lookout for a new coach following Jose Peseiro's decision to step down from his position at the end of his contract on February 29th.
The Portuguese football tactician was offered fresh terms by the Nigerian Federation but the parties could not agree on financial terms.
Oliseh meets the qualities needed to coach the Super Eagles as he possesses the necessary coaching qualifications, has the experience of managing football at the highest level and is an expert on African football.
One aspect working against him is his history as a hothead during his playing days and his initial tenure as coach of the Super Eagles, during which he clashed with key national team players and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation.
When asked if he would apply to coach the Super Eagles, Oliseh said on Channels Television Sports: "At the moment what I can say is that I will take a joker on that question.
"Like I have also often said if Nigeria needs my services I will always help Nigeria if the right conditions are there."
A key member of Nigeria's Dream Team that won the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, Oliseh has managed Dutch club Fortuna Sittard and German side SV Straelen in the past.
