Super Eagles centre-back resumes training at Boavista after contracting malaria at AFCON
Published: February 22, 2024
Chidozie Awaziem has returned to Portugal and resumed training at Primeira Liga side Boavista, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The central defender was a member of the Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Awaziem's return to Portugal was delayed for some days as he was recovering after contracting malaria on the tournament's final day, where the Super Eagles faced the Elephants.
The Porto-reared centre-back was named in the Super Eagles matchday squad against Ivory Coast but was a non-playing substitute, and showed signs of physical weakness when the Super Eagles returned to Abuja.
He made only one appearance during the tournament in Ivory Coast, coming off the bench in the fourth minute of stoppage time to replace Ola Aina in a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau.
It remains to be seen whether Awaziem will be named in the matchday squad for Boavista's league match against Sporting de Braga on Monday, February 26.
This season, Awaziem has featured in seventeen matches in all competitions for Boavista, accumulating five yellow cards in the process.
