'He reminds me of Drogba' - Arsenal legend Emmanuel Eboue warns Elephants to be wary of Osimhen
Published: February 11, 2024
The final of the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations pits tournament favorites Nigeria against Ivory Coast this Sunday at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan.
It's the second time the two West African giants will have played each other in the ongoing tournament as the Super Eagles defeated the Elephants 1-0 on matchday two in the group stage courtesy of William Troost-Ekong's match-winning strike from the spot in the 55th minute.
Nigeria and Ivory Coast are meeting for the eighth time in AFCON history with three wins for the men in green and two for the men in Orange.
One Super Eagles player primed to play a key role in the final as Nigeria look to overcome Ivory Coast to win their fourth Africa Cup of Nations is reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen.
Arsenal legend Emmanuel Eboue, who competed at five Africa Cup of Nations wearing the colours of Ivory Coast, has given a warning to the Elephants about the threat that Osimhen will pose them tonight and likened the Super Eagles number 9 to Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba.
Speaking to France 24 on the eve of the final, Eboue said: "He reminds me of Drogba, he has a bit of the same style. Drogba gave his all, weighed a lot on the defense, and Osimhen did the same.
"For a defender, playing against this kind of attacker is difficult: you don't know what he's going to do. When a defender has the ball, he presses it at every moment."
Osimhen has one goal to his name in the ongoing tournament but has registered 24 shots, more than any other player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and nine more than Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Mohamed Fofana who has a team-high figure of fifteen.
