'I am certain of that' - Hugo Broos insists Bafana Bafana won't be under pressure against Super Eagles
Published: February 04, 2024
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has inisisted that his side are under no pressure heading into the semifinal clash with Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
The 1996 Africa champions had to labor hard to book their place in the last four for the first time in 24 years, beating Cape Verde through penalties on Saturday night.
Not many would have predicted that Bafana Bafana would advance to this stage of the tournament after their opening-game defeat to Mali but they have grown immensely since then.
Thanks to the impressive Ronwen Williams, Bafana Bafana have one of the best defenses among the four teams left at the 2023 AFCON and are now set to face another test against Nigeria.
Speaking at his post-match conference after Bafana Bafana defeated Cape Verde, Broos said that his side are under no pressure heading into the game with the Super Eagles, suggesting that his side has surpassed expectations already.
In quotes relayed by France24, the Belgium-born tactician said: "It is maybe bizarre for me to say that but for us our AFCON has already been a success. We are in the semi-finals. Nobody thought we would do that when we left South Africa to come here.
"There will be less pressure on us, I am certain of that. That doesn't mean we don't want to play the final, certainly not."
The 71-year-old helped Cameroon conquer the continent in 2017 and will be hoping to replicate the same with South Africa this year.
