'There's still work to be done' - Most experienced Super Eagles AFCON player Omeruo not getting carried away
Published: February 03, 2024
Kasimpasa central defender Kenneth Omeruo is not getting carried awa despite the Super Eagles advancing to the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations, with their fourth consecutive win and clean sheet on the bounce.
With nineteen games under his belt spread across four tournaments, Omeruo is the most experienced Super Eagles player at the Africa Cup of Nations.
With Nigeria 1-0 up and needing a clean sheet to progress to the semifinals, manager Jose Peseiro brought him on to replace Ademola Lookman in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Omeruo suggested that there were distractions from the media in the lead-up to the game against Angola but the Super Eagles remained focused.
Sharing his thoughts on the Super Eagles win against the Palancas Negras, Omeruo said to reporters in the mixed zone:"I feel good, there is still work to be done but I'm happy we could win this game because there was a lot of talk from the media and all, but we stayed concentrated.
"We kept to our game plan and at the end of the day we won."
The Super Eagles have shown their mentality and character at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, needing less than two minutes to equalize after going behind against Equatorial Guinea, before picking up four straight wins without conceding.
Asked why the Super Eagles are ticking, Omeruo answered: "The unity between us and the tactics of the coach."
Omeruo has been involved in the last four matches contested by the Super Eagles at the 2023 AFCON but only one as a starter.
