'We don't care about who scores' - MotM Moses Simon defends Osimhen over four-game goal drought
Published: February 03, 2024
Speaking at the post-match conference after the Super Eagles' victory over Angola, Moses Simon, who was named the official Man of the Match, shared his views on Victor Osimhen's inability to score chances that have come his way at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Since scoring the Super Eagles' only goal in the opening game against Equatorial Guinea, the Napoli forward is yet to find the back of the net, embarking on a four-game goal drought in the process.
He had a good opportunity to end his dry spell in front of goal against Angola but had his shot blocked, to the surprise of many.
Simon has revealed that he and the rest of the squad are not worried about Osimhen's wastefulness in front of goal but they are rather concentrated on winning.
"The mood is very good in the camp. Likewise, everyone, we don't even think about this and I believe he doesn't think about scoring. He thinks about victory, if he has the opportunity, he will score," Simon told reporters.
"The most important thing is that we just want to win, we don't care about who scores or who doesn't score.
The Nantes forward also talked through the Super Eagles' solitary goal against the Black Sable Antelopes which should go down as one of the best team efforts in the tournament.
"Actually what was going through my mind was either I pass the ball to Victor or Ademola who scored but at the moment you don't need to be selfish, you just need to feed them and they scored and I am happy to give the chances."
The move started with Alex Iwobi feeding Zaidu Sanusi, then the Porto left-back passed to Simon who outpaced his marker before squaring the ball to the goalscorer, Ademola Lookman.
With the Super Eagles looking tired late on in the game, the 28-year-old also spoke on whether the weather condition affected their performances.
"Actually, I would say no because we are all the same. When it is hot, when you feel it, they also feel it. For me it doesn't matter, we are all the same."
